There is no denying that firearm deaths and injuries are a serious public problem. In 2020, there were more than 45,000 firearm-related deaths in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Firearm injuries affect people in all stages of life, with firearm-related injuries among the five leading causes of death for people ages 1-44 in the U.S. Meanwhile, the United States leads the world in civilian gun ownership with a ratio of 120.5 firearms per 100 residents, according to a recent Global Firearms Holdings – Small Arms survey.
